Caitlin and Sarah McGrady are in the midst of their first Christmas together without their husband/father, and they will soon find out. Not only is the broken vow of marriage an agony in its own right; it raises, like the holidays, greater questions: a “winning” and a “losing” side, the disintegration of things once set in stone, tipped scales of responsibility, the specter of poverty, how to “go back on one’s word” in the presence of a child one seeks neither to hurt nor deceive. Moving, with a curious mix of family members, from Christmas Eve in Manhattan into Christmas Day in Caitlin’s sparse Williamsburg apartment, A Child’s Christmas in Williamsburg discloses, through an examination of the first coming last, and the last coming first, how our issues are less modern than they are recurring aspects of our ever-present origins. It is about childhood and parenthood, the steadfast rejection of rampant materiality, and a vindication of life and letters. And it is a prose poem of the first order to New York City.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0793/8044/7550/files/NICOLELLO-ACHILD_SCHRISTMASINWILLIAMSBURG.jpg?v=1757008178
at-the-bottom-of-the-year
At the Bottom of the Year

About the Book

Each Advent season is new. Those most recent have been tumultuous: COVID, bitterly cold snows, visionaries speaking frankly of a coming apocalypse. But other things as well: our own issues, the creeping age factor, the death of loved ones. Advent, like a creaking old metal gate, corrects us every time. It lets us know that only one thing matters: the stable, that little crib where cows chewed hay. Children, and childlike adults, still find all the consolation they need there. We wait for a Jesus who only does joyous endings, whose glory is in that star, in snowy fields––in those who have passed on, and in those who will. These poems celebrate the sweetness of His coming, His presence. We must learn to be still, to wait for and with the One who gives us Life. Praise Him.

About the Book

Beneath the Silent Heavens reimagines the story of the Flood and the Ark. Enter a world aglitter with the brightness of decadence: generations asunder, forgotten wisdom lapsing into legend, Earth plagued by monstrous otherworldly evil yet seeming to wish its own doom. Here is tale-telling pageantry: epochs (our own among them) whirled together, populated with patriarchs and hipsters, artists, intellectuals, peasants, high rhetoric and hearthside banter, words of passion and of skepticism, and animals who still have the way of speech—all against the backdrop of Noe (the last who hears the animal speech) struggling together with his family against suspicion and violence. With its eerie atmosphere of doom pervading the many times and customs (human or animal) on display, Beneath the Silent Heavens offers a glimpse of “wonder before the sheer prodigality of creation,” a vision of creation as ecological as it is Eucharistic. The defining events of the faith are explored with depth and freshness here, but also the tender moments that perhaps we consider less: Mary feeling the first movements of her baby within her, or Saint Joseph sitting beside his sleeping son. Written during Read’s first ten years as a Catholic and poet in residence of the Hermitage of the Three Holy Hierarchs, the central narrative is interwoven with lyrical, contemplative pieces about God and our relationship with him. Narratives that have lost any genuine explanatory power, along with the biased historical scholarship of earlier centuries, have become entrenched in the minds of millions, seemingly immune from being dislodged. Such simplistic queries as “What about Galileo?” “What about the Crusades?” are still meant to draw Catholics up short, a conversation-stopper. Scholarship of recent decades, however, has thrown new light on these matters, and is finally allowing the truths of history to become more widely known. Here is the distillation of the best of that recent historical work for students and adults alike—an unadorned laying bare of the truth. The five myths analyzed in this book have each been shaped by post-Reformation propaganda and Enlightenment prejudices and their residual effects. With Gerard Verschuuren’s new book, Catholics now have sure and ready replies to these baneful narratives.

About the Book

Glastonbury Abbey was, according to legend, the center from which radiated a Christian presence on that island for two thousand years, a sacred site from which the Christian faith was passed down through the generations. The story begins with the arrival of Joseph of Arimathea and his family, bearing the most sacred relic in all Christendom, the Holy Grail; and continues on to their confrontation with the Druids and the conversion of the new land to Christ; to the persecutions under the Roman Empire, until that rule is ended and Patrick becomes the first Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey; the adventures of King Arthur and his knights as they fend off invading barbarians; the revival of Christianity under St. Augustine of Canterbury; the struggle to keep alive the Faith in the midst of the Viking raids; the ages of Alfred the Great and Richard the Lionheart; and ends, finally, with the terrible upheavals under Henry VIII. Glastonbury was dissolved but its ruins still stand as a beacon of hope and destination of pilgrims down to our own time. Presenting the best work of Japan's haiku masters alongside his own lucid commentary, Blyth's volumes communicate the true meaning and spirit of haiku in a way rarely accessible to western readers.

The concluding volume of Blyth's anthology, Haiku Vol. IV (Autumn and Winter) contains a wide sampling of haiku particularly attuned to these two seasons. The resultant ten letters from Rilke, published after his death, contain words of luminous intimacy where Rilke shapes the ecstasy of youthful desire into a consideration of how to live life deliberately. Becoming an artist is an apprenticeship in solitude, seeking, and suffering. When initially asked by Herr Kappus whether his verses are good, Rilke counters with the dismissal of all such outward concerns, and an admonition to go inside oneself, to discover whether one’s poetic motives reach to the hidden recesses of the heart. For the artist is on his own, alone, centered in his innermost depths. Rilke next speaks of surrounding oneself with books, in which one may enter worlds of inconceivable greatness. In a subsequent letter he writes of the artist’s vocation as one of growing into the spirit of childhood, where everything that happens is forever a beginning. And he writes of moments of sorrow as a new thing entering us; and, unnoticed, becoming a part of our very life-blood. For Rilke, art is a way of living: becoming a poet or an artist is not so much about learning one’s craft as about becoming a certain kind of person. Act is preceded by being, so that an unrestrained devotion to the creative process must proceed from the nurturing of patience and a deepening of one’s interior life. An immense inner stillness, reaching through time, rightly precedes all efforts of artistic creation. Developing as an artist is not measured by time or any external markers: “Being an artist means, not reckoning and counting, but ripening like the tree, which does not force its sap, and stands confident in the storms of spring without the fear that after them will come no summer. It does come. But it comes only to the patient, who are there as though eternity lay before them….” This is a book to encounter in youth and remain with into old age, a vade mecum in the school of artistic being and thoughtful living.

About the Book

Here are truly inspired poems. They breathe a primeval freshness—with metaphysical and spiritual insight articulating perennial wisdom anew. Yet the poet sings also of our own time: of the trauma of the refugee crisis in Europe and the Middle East, the suffering of the dispossessed. His verses are many-layered in their meanings and far-reaching in their range; they are musical yet stark in truth-telling, both playful and profound. he saw. The renewal promised from the Second Vatican Council had produced… disaster. Father Sludge was putting on “Eucharists” with nuns in slacks reading porn from Beardsley and revolution from Marx. Pastors were gutting their sanctuaries and selling off church heirlooms. A cabal of modernist priests was purging diocesan schools of traditional Catholics. It was time, decided the bishop, for his Bomb: a letter to the clergy of the diocese, in which he authorizes the Old Mass to be celebrated regularly, corrects the worst abuses of the New Mass, mandates kneeling for the reception of Communion, and bans Communion in the hand. The Bomb sets off blast and counterblast—all the way to Rome. Opposing forces maneuver for the confrontation.

How the issue gets resolved provides the theme of a novel unique in the annals of Catholic literature. It takes the form of letters from the bishop himself: a tough infighter—and a saint; a man of humility and charity—with a nose for humbug and an eye for the absurd. What emerges from these remarkable letters is a bishop for the ages—not the sort we meet these days. But along with this extraordinary man we are treated to what may be the most incisive analyses of the crisis in the Catholic Church ever to see print. What duller writers take chapters and books to say, Bishop Forester declaims in a few pages. This volume consists of translations of three collections of Blok’s verse: Ante Lucem (1898–1900), Verses about the Beautiful Lady (1901–1902), and Crossroads (1902–1904). These poems describe Blok’s visions of Sophia, the Beautiful Lady, who appeared to him at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. Sophia is the mysterious feminine principle behind all creation; Blok calls her the Mysterious Maiden, the Empress of the Universe, the Eternal Bride, and he sees her in the blue sky and the heavens full of stars, as well as in the dawns and sunsets of Russia. He identifies the Beautiful Lady with a real girl, Liubov Dmitrievna Mendeleeva, whom he courts ardently in the woods and meadows of the countryside outside of Moscow, as well as in the misty maritime setting of Petersburg.

About the Book

Composed in a burst of inspiration near the end of the poet’s life, Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus represents the consummation of the writer’s career, distilling the essence of his poetic wisdom in a gem-like sequence. Now a convert, Geoffrey struggles to see with his reason what his wife Anna intuits to her horror: the steady possession of a once-Christian West by the twin forces of Secular Materialism and Secular Spiritualism—the New Secular Religion and New Age Religion. In Ireland, land of saints and scholars, the transformation is rapid and devastating: over 1,500 years of faith evaporating in just 50 years. Meanwhile, Anna’s cousin Brigid, who grew up Catholic, is now entangled with Gareth LightShadow, a slick salesman of post-Christian enlightenment—and a smooth operator with the ladies. In the process, we are taken behind the scenes to the little-known but deeply influential promoters of (in GT’s words) “Eastern Occultism Without Christ.” We are left with no doubts: something profoundly disturbing, an epochal shift, is under way, driven by giant political and economic interests. She must reclaim these gifts in order to face a terrible curse cast long before her birth. Prince Erik grew up hearing stories of a sleeping princess, but all does not end happily when he wakes her. For what happens when a princess of legend awakens in a world that fears all to do with the old kingdom and Færie? Intertwined in both Rosa’s and Erik’s lives is the figure of the Golden King and the ancient curse that separated him from his faerie bride. In this charming, if utterly perplexing novella, Machen begins his story in the anxious, dark, despairing streets of 1915 London, then in short order leads the reader to a transfigured world in western Wales, where a small village has recently been visited by three ancient saints bearing the Holy Grail. This event has wrought, in both the countryside and the souls inhabiting it, a wondrous reawakening. In keeping with Machen’s idiosyncratic writing style, The Great Return offers little in the way of concrete detail. of a young man who “has it all”—until a fateful series of events leads him to a monastery. As Huguenot violence mounts, the characters of the story are pushed to extremes of hatred and love. The reader is swept along by a narrative as twisting and turbulent as a mountain stream, which culminates in a sovereign sacrifice as unforgettable as it was unforeseen. This is a story that shows with utter vividness the power of romantic love to cripple and deform, the power of suffering to undermine illusions and induce the labor of self-discovery, the power of prayer to reassemble the shards of the shattered image of God in the soul, and the power of the priest as the divine Physician’s privileged instrument.

At the center of the novel is the awesome mystery, scandal, consolation, and provocation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Further, we find between these two a mutuality, even identity, in the Holy Spirit understood as “The Spirit of Wisdom” (Deut. 3:1). This Holy Spirit has feminine aspects also in the New Testament, as seen in such significant signs as, for instance, at the Baptism in the Jordan, where the dove (peristera, columba) is a symbol of maternity, and in John 3:6, where it is made clear that the new, divine life in humankind is delivered by the Holy Spirit: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” The Spirit bears us anew, and in this function may be understood as Mother. It is to the recovery of this maternal image of the Spirit that Prof. Cselényi dedicates this It describes the experiences of twelve-year-old Richard during the early hours of Good Friday and the early stages of spring, in a church school in the Tennessee mountains. In this story of change and visitations, Agee has come close to a small triumph: he has pierced the protective shell of a boy’s personality and exposed his religious exaltation without once falling into bathos. It is a story clear on its surface, but beneath that surface dreamlike in its complexity and ambiguity. Its rare mix of perception and disciplined lyricism have made this novel a minor And yet, when the treasure of the ancient MacGorilla clan is stolen from their castle in the Scottish Highlands, it seems that one or more of the soft toys gathered there must surely be the culprit, or culprits. Trapped in the castle with his fellow toys by an unexpected snow storm, one small bear, with the aid of an even smaller pig and an easily distracted ape, must discover where the treasure is and who took it. Along the way adventures and perils abound: hidden passages, a lost library, a chase through a moonlit maze, flooding stairwells, rubber balls, paper clips, waffles, garbled aphorisms, and ever so much more. He was the most important Russian speculative thinker of that century, publishing major works on theoretical philosophy, the philosophy of religion, and ethics. He also wrote profound religious verse, much of which is translated into English here for the first time. Included are all of the short lyric poems; Three Meetings, an autobiographical poem of mystical visions; The White Lily, a comical-mystical play, a genre invented by Solovyov; and a ground-breaking essay (translated into English for the first time) on Solovyov’s poetry by the eminent theologian Sergius Bulgakov. The most important poems are sophianic, in that they express a personal relation to Sophia, whom Solovyov encountered several times during his life. This book presents an aspect of Solovyov’s work that most readers are unaware of; it enables us to watch a spiritual genius plumbing the depths of cosmic truth.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0793/8044/7550/files/SOLOVYOV-RELIGIOUSPOETRYOFVLADIMIRSOLOVYOV.jpg?v=1757008548
these-bright-shadows
These Bright Shadows

About the Book

This collection of studies by the eminent author Brian Keeble, a long-time friend, colleague, and editor of the poet, is a series of regards, each having a focal point that differs from its neighbors, but which nonetheless is directed towards the same subject—the poet’s singular imaginative vision.

About the Book

From Medieval miniatures to Renaissance paintings to modern Christmas cards, few Western images are as evocative and enigmatic as the Three Wise Men at the Nativity. It was described in the Italian press as a literary atomic bomb, or pyrobolus atomicus—a term found in the Italian-Latin dictionary of Cardinal Bacci, who had served four popes in the drawing up of major documents, and who contributed a daring foreword to Casini’s cri de cœur against the vulgarization of Catholic liturgy in the name of “reform.” Representing both the common man and the educated of his day, Casini spares nothing and no one in his defense of cherished traditions and his critique of utopian innovations. Although the process of relentless aggiornamento churned on inexorably in spite of such protests, Casini’s work stands today as both a powerfully moving record of the struggles of the early traditionalist movement, caught by surprise in the maelstrom of Montini’s pontificate, and an exemplary exercise of the parrhesia or boldness that belongs to the baptized in Christ. The Torn Tunic was in its day a testimonial of profound love for tradition in the face of callous contempt; for readers over half a century later, it reads like a prophecy of better days to come, when the same tradition, surviving against all odds, would be rediscovered by new generations.

About the Book

This Our Exile brings together short stories preoccupied with the eternal questions—incarnating them afresh through the singularities that mark our secular age.
