About the Book

First published in 1943, Difficulties in Mental Prayer has guided generations of Catholics through the everyday obstacles of prayer: distractions, dryness, discouragement, and the struggle to persevere. It remains both an accessible introduction and a lasting source of encouragement; and is less a manual of instructions than an invitation: to begin, to continue, and never to lose heart in prayer. With clarity and warmth, Dom Eugene Boylan offers much practical wisdom that has made this classic beloved by Catholics worldwide.

About the Author

Dom Eugene Boylan, O.C.S.O. (1904–1964) was an Irish Trappist monk, scientist, and spiritual writer. After earning degrees in mathematics and physics in Dublin and Vienna, he entered Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea, where he was ordained in 1937. Beloved as a retreat master and confessor, Boylan authored two enduring classics of spirituality: Difficulties in Mental Prayer (1943) and This Tremendous Lover (1946). His writings continue to inspire lay people and religious alike with their rare combination of intellectual clarity and pastoral gentleness. He was appointed abbot of Roscrea in 1962 and died unexpectedly in 1964.
